This is basically the real excursion trips in Skagway and everybody goes on this one and with good reason. This train ride gives spectacular and breath-taking views of Alaska. Make sure that you sit on the left side of the train on the way up. The staff asks you to switch to the right side on the way down but it's my recommendation that the views are best on the left on the way up.

Our tour included a comfortable bus ride to the summit ending in a border crossing to the Yukon. The Driver/tour guide was a awesome young fellow who clearly enjoyed his job and made sure everybody enjoyed this part of the trip. The train took us back to Skagway and we had a different but equally awesome views of the beautiful scenery and the narration was very informative. Definitely a must do and the city of Skagway is a very nice city to visit.

This is an excellent tour! I know some of the reviews say this tour is too long but we did not find this at all! We were picked up by a comfortable coach bus on the pier and taken to the train station. The train ride was excellent with excellent narration done along the way. We went in October so it was a bit cold in the train coach with it being heated by a wood fed stove in the front of each coach, so dress accordingly. The scenery was breath taking to say the least. There were excellent platforms between the train coaches you were allowed out on to take photographs and everyone on our train were very good at sharing this limited space. We also received, free, a nice little Onboard magazine which provided information on the route and best places to take pictures along the route. You could also buy a CD on the train. We were then met by our bus diver--Valerie, who was excellent and also provided narration along the way. It was not overwhelming narration either, again, some reviews have expressed this. There was ample time on the bus with stops to take photographs again, not rushed at all but organized so we stayed on schedule. The BBQ chicken lunch was nice with coffee and donuts to finish. The petting zoo was your typical petting zoo but cute. The dogs were interesting to observe, we did not take advantage of paying extra to be pulled by one of the dog-teams in a wheeled sled. I would recommend this excursion for the scenery and did not find it long at all.

My husband and I booked this tour through our cruise line. We were picked up promptly from our cruise port. We had to line up in sections depending upon your tour. We had the train portion first so our bus driver, Devon, transported us to the train station and met us after the Train portion was done to continue on with our bus part of our tour. He was very friendly & informative. It was great overall. Started out by seeing the Gold Rush Cemetery followed by some waterfalls coming off the mountain to our right. Pretty landscapes along the way. The fog did roll in so some things we couldn’t see like the Tunnel & raises railways. After switching to the bus we made a few stops. Carcross Desert was cool to see as well. All the sand in the middle of no where. Another stop was for lunch at Caribou Crossing & enjoy a BBQ lunch & time to wander around & see the animals. The museum was nice. Emerald Lake was another stop for some pretty photos. We then went into White Pass and had some time to wander around the stores there. We saw Bridal Veil Falls up close. Then we had the option to be delivered back to the boat or had the option to be dropped in town. We decided for town so we could sightsee some before we had to reboard.

From our cruise ship that booked the event for us, got tickets, location and times to meet at the port. Got on a bus and right away the driver (Brit) started gettting us all informed of the area. Stopped for a great lunch at a lodge then took the climb up to the train depot while gettting schooled and some amazing Amercian history. We arrived and got on the train and made our way back down the pass while hearing stories along the way of riches, heart ache and despair during gold rush times. Worth every penny ! Loved it

A great train trip up over 4000 feet to White Pass in old carriages. Commentary was excellent and the staff on the train were very friendly

Although there were many options to view the White Pass Summit, while in Skagway we are glad we chose this option. We boarded the train in the morning and headed to the summit. My husband loves trains so this was a wonderful way to see one side of the summit. We had plenty of room to spread out and we were also able to go outside on the deck for better views. We had a good guide that narrated the trip, but there were also Assistant's assigned to the train car for assistance, provide additional information and answer questions. We crossed into the Canada border, where our guide picked us up on a bus and drove us back to Skagway. This allowed us the opportunity to see the other side of the summit, including the "Welcome to Alaska" sign. All in my group thought this was a good trip (Alesia) was a good guide and we enjoyed seeing the little town of Skagway.

We were cramped into the back seat of the bus with a view of the bathroom door. We were left off last at every stop and had very little time to explore. The BBQ chicken was barely cooked because again we were the last off. We were not able to sit on the best side of the train (again because we were last off) and when I went out on the platform to take pictures, one of the passengers yelled at me for “hogging the view” and he asked the conductor to make me go sit down. Don’t waste your money on the bus tour, just go on the White Pass, but make sure you sit on the best side!

We decided to take the train ride in the afternoon. We chose a hike and river float for the morning excursion. The train ride was very relaxing. The train ride provided amazing scenic views just as previous reviews reported, however, I'm not sure why it is rated as the number one thing to do in Skagway. In my personal opinion, it did not live up to the hype. It sounded like our guide was reading from a script that seemed pretty dry. We did see a bear and the guide did inform us where to look to catch a quick glimpse of the bear. The seats on the train were comfortable and each car does have a bathroom. They do provide complimentary water, which we appreciated. I did like that we were able to stand on the platform of the train car in order to get great pictures. I would recommend this trip if you are looking to avoid a bus ride along narrow highways but still want to see some amazing views.
