My friends and I were on a girls weekend and got tickets for the fireworks cruise. We were told they were taking all covid precautions. When we walked up to the ship, we knew we were in for a couple problems. 1. There wasn't enough seats for all the people they sold tickets to. It was a sold out tour and 3 out of the 5 of us were stuck literally standing in a corner of the ship next to a staircase. 2. We had to wear our masks to get on the ship but then were allowed to take it off. This would be fine if there was any space between strangers on the ship. With as tightly as we were packed in, we were definitely not doing any social distancing. This could have been a fun thing to do if there had been room for us on the ship, but 75 minutes is a long time to have to stand in one place for.
After a little rocky start on buying tickets online and getting a minor refund for insurance from the personable wife of the Tour owner, we had a great, great night on this trip. We would strongly suggest that you visit Navy Pier and buy tickets directly from the operator. Take the VIP package. It gets you onboard faster. IMHO, the best seating is on the starboard (right) side of the ship. Sit with your back to the masts/sails. The fireworks are great. We had a beautiful night with fair winds. This is not a full sailing trip. You'll motor out then catch some wind after the fireworks end and sail along the shoreline returning to Navy Pier under power. They do invite guests to help with the sails. This tour is not covered by the City Explorer Pass but don't let that put you off. It's well worth foregoing the attraction on the pass and booking the trip.
1st let me say the Tall Ship Windy and crew were great. The fireworks show was awesome except for one minor drawback "Who in the heck picked the music and WHY! Captain speaking over the speakers saying he wants to hear the Ohhhs and Ahhhs but you could not even speak over the music, let alone hear the fireworks. We went this trip taking a friend, and well did not go as well as hoped. Do not think they will be back to take another cruise soon. Turn down the music when the fireworks display is on, listen to the wind in the sails, and the booms of the display. This was the Air and Water show weekend and sail was supposed to be the relaxing end of an exciting day
Took this tall ship cruise on Lake Michigan located on Navy Pier. It was a Wednesday night, so we had the opportunity to see an amazing fireworks show from the deck of the ship. Some of the sails were hoisted, and we got to sail just using the great Chicago wind (hence the ship name Windy). Friendly crew, and a relaxing time on the lake. Would highly recommend for tourists and locals.
This was my 2nd Fireworks Cruise with Tall Ship Windy, and this time around had 4 teens (13-17 yrs.) with us. They LOVED the pirate-themed cruise. Bring a jacket - it gets cold on the water at night even in the Summer, especially if you're not used to water/lake life. They do have blankets on board, which were much needed because the temperature was in the high 40s. Bring a rain poncho even if there is only a slight chance of rain. The covered area is very small, and it was drizzling both both of my trips (1st trip late-July 2018, 2nd trip June 2019) and everything was wet. This trip rarely cancels, and I wouldn't bother with trip insurance. The crew members were friendly and fun. I highly recommend this casual, laid back cruise.
We took a mother/son (19 years old) trip to Chicago Memorial weekend. I was debating whether or not to do the fireworks show. I am so glad we did. It was an amazing show right on the lake. Well worth the extra money. My son enjoyed helping hoist the sails. I appreciated how smooth the ride was. And the Chicago skyline at night is breathtaking. A very entertaining event.
We booked this cruise for a visitor from the UK and thought it might be a romantic night out. It was so much more! From the personable crew (yes, Nick you're gorgeous and amazing just like you told us you were!) to the beauty of the ship itself the entire experience was perfect. The captain got us close to the fireworks display which were gorgeous and then after the display went on to sail the lake in the cool of the night with old rock music drifting along the winds with us. Peaceful, picturesque and beautiful, romantic and just a bit more...we would do it again in a heartbeat and in fact are already planning our next trip with them. I would recommend this to anyone that wishes to cruise Lake Michigan on the last family owned ship docked at Navy Pier. Thanks gang...you were amazing. It just couldn't have been any better.
We honestly ended up on the Windy because of a series of events. We are so glad we did because it was where we supposed to be. From our first experience with Sandy at the ticket booth to every cast/crew on the boat - we had a wonderful time. We literally had a front row seat for the fireworks and then a beautiful leisurely sail around the lake. We highly recommend this cruise to anyone looking at Fireworks cruise options from Navy Pier. I just wish we had more time to explore more Windy cruise options. Great ship! Great way to support small business!
